2013/14 RECAP: 2nd Annual Alumni Dinner and Awards Night

By Lucy Mwangi

After a 2012/13 year of great service, commitment and diligence by RCNC members, it was in order to prepare a banquet to appreciate and honor the members for making RCNC the club it is.

The night of Saturday November 8th, 2013 and it was all glamour for the RCNC. It was the night to celebrate 36 years of fun and fellowship, the night to celebrate our members past, present and future.

The “All Things Elegant” night kicked off at 6.30 p.m. with guests streaming into the Laico Regency, Nairobi and elegant they looked! Thank God for the red carpet photo shoot that captured all that glam!

After sharing a great four course meal, the bold and beautiful Queen of radio, Ms. Caroline Mutoko took her chance to share with RCNC. Kiss 100’s ‘The Big Breakfast’ presenter and writer for the Star Newspaper confessed that she was happy to be invited to an event where young people come together and come up with ways to better their communities… and look good while at it!!

All that said with lots praise for the RCNC and its work, Caroline threw a challenge, to paraphrase “I’d like to see these tables having some of the people you help and mentor, let them too come and see what they can grow to do, what they can become…!” And the ball is back in RCNC’s court!

The energetic Joe Brachoki was there too and very excited. At just 29 years old he’s been there and done that; user interface design, project management, math teacher, dog trainer, English teacher but finally, In his words, he found his passion in Kenya, working with Living Positive Kenya. He encouraged all to continue with the work of giving back to the community; what is done, no matter how little is seems goes a long way and challenged all to do one better always as we continue in community service.

We were also glad to have with us representatives from some of our partners and friends; the Jomo Kenyatta Foundation, Standard Chartered Bank – Eastleigh, Group Africa, Skeltek Consult. The Rotary family was well represented as well, the District D9212 Rotaract Representative, Sarah Maingi; the Rotaract Club of Muthaiga, the Rotaract Club of Milimani, the Rotaract Club of Nairobi East, the Rotaract Club of the University of Nairobi, Rotary Club of Madaraka and our sponsors Rotary Club of Nairobi.

Then it was award time! The membership past and present were awarded for their dedicated and diligent service to the club as were the service committees. Notably the Service Above Self Award went to the RCNC Past President Huma Kaoga Kaseu and the RCNC Lifetime Achievement Award went to one Irinah Katherina Wandera.

Fun aside, it was also a business affair, we were also there to fundraise for the ‘A Girl A K A Year’ Sanitary Towel Project. Ms. Mutoko, also known to be involved in various charity and community service projects including the support of sanitary towel provision to underprivileged girls made a donation of Ksh. 15,000, presenting a cheque as such to the RCNC President 2013-14 Norman Kuria. With greetings and a heartfelt apology for his absence, Dr. Rtn. Manu Chandaria also sent a generous donation of Kshs. 20,000 towards the same project….and our vision to see 1,500 girls provided for with hygienic sanitary wear came that much closer to being a reality; heartfelt gratitude to every individual who has made a contribution towards this project.

With the formalities out of the way, the party didn’t stop! And the night was danced into morning…..
Truly a great night celebrating service, fellowship and friendship! We look forward to the next one
